Redskins safety Montae Nicholson arrested, charged with assault

The Washington Redskins have had some trouble with players and legal issues in recent weeks. Today, another incident was brought to light, this time concerning second-year safety Montae Nicholson.
When the Washington Redskins traded for Ha Ha Clinton-Dix earlier in the 2018 season, it was originally thought that Washington would continue to rotate Montae Nicholson into the safety groupings, due to his speed and length.
However, the Redskins sapped almost all of his defensive snaps from the game, and per J.P. Finlay of CBS Mid-Atlantic, the reasoning for Nicholson’s snap decrease was largely contingent on health issues, rather than character issues.
But earlier today, it was revealed that Nicholson had apparently failed to execute discipline off the field. In a recent incident he was arrested and charged with assault and battery, as well as public drunkenness. ESPN’s John Keim released the official police report on Twitter.
This incident undoubtedly throws Nicholson’s future with the Redskins in jeopardy. The 23-year old was drafted by the team in the fourth round of the 2017 NFL Draft, and after earning the starting job opposite D.J. Swearinger after two games, he showed immense promise, displaying a special combination of speed and length.
Nicholson’s rookie season would ultimately be cut short by injuries, and in 2018, while he started the year as a starting safety, his role was put into question with inconsistent play. Even though he still provided starting-quality production, the Redskins opted to trade for Ha Ha Clinton-Dix ahead of the trade deadline, effectively sending Nicholson to the bench.
While Nicholson’s benching was without rationality, this recent incident absolves Washington’s coaches from future wrongdoing. Nicholson could very well be off the team in the coming days, as the charges in question are very serious. It’s sad to see a talented player make a choice that sends his career into a spiral. If updates are provided in response to these developments, we will keep you in the loop.
