Redskins place cornerback Joshua Holsey on injured reserve

The Redskins suffered another blow to their already dwindling cornerback depth on Sunday.

The Washington Redskins haven’t had the best of injury luck over the past two years. Last season, injuries on the offensive line headlined a disappointing 7-9 campaign, and this season, the defense has joined in on the fun.

2018 started out on a promising note, when Quinton Dunbar notched an interception in his first game as a starter, against the Arizona Cardinals. Dunbar, however, would miss an extended period of time with a nerve injury in his shin, and behind him, the depth at cornerback proved to be shot, with rookies Greg Stroman and Danny Johnson receiving heightened minutes.

When Joshua Holsey was able to come back later on, the team didn’t hesitate to elevate him off of the PUP list, and onto the roster. But now, Holsey’s stint with the team in 2018 is over as quickly as it began. Per J.P. Finlay of NBC Sports Mid-Atlantic, Holsey has been placed on injured reserve by the Redskins, effectively ending his season.

Per Jay Gruden, via John Keim of ESPN, Holsey suffered a partially torn ACL and will face a recovery period. Undrafted rookie Danny Johnson also suffered an apparent injury, although his status is still pending.

It’s a disappointing fate for Holsey, who was one of two seventh-round picks in 2017. He’d missed a good portion of the season due to a toe injury, and when he came back, he was expected to be crucial added depth, to a secondary that desperately needed it. Now, his second season as a pro is over, and the Redskins’ depth problem lingers yet.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if the Redskins looked to add someone at the cornerback position in the coming days. After their 16-13 victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Redskins are 7-7, and surprisingly in the thick of the NFC wild card race. They’re also only one game behind the NFC East leading Dallas Cowboys, who were shut out by the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.

Washington still has a chance to reach the postseason, and for a number of coaches whose jobs are on the line in the coming weeks, added cornerback depth should be high on the priorities list. Holsey’s injury only makes a direly thin unit even thinner.
