Redskins sign three, waive RB Kapri Bibbs, place LS Nick Sundberg on IR
The shuffling of the Washington Redskins roster continued on Saturday night. They added three new players to their roster while waiving fan-favorite Kapri Bibbs and ending Nick Sundberg‘s 2018 season.
The 2018 season has not been kind to the Redskins. At all. Marred with injuries for the second-straight year, the team has struggled to field a complete roster at times this season. That said, they have also made some inefficient roster decisions and most recently, practice squad receiver Simmie Cobbs left for the Saints to join their team. The Redskins reactively had offered him a roster spot once the Saints came calling, but per usual, the squad wasn’t proactive regarding roster decisions.
On Saturday, the Redskins were once again making a flurry of roster moves to help deal with some injury issues. And, of course, they leave a lot to be desired.
According to the team’s official Twitter, they have added three players to the roster, waived two, and placed one on IR. Here’s the Tweet with the official moves.
Obviously, the biggest takeaway here is that Kapri Bibbs has been waived. The Redskins have been carrying five running backs since Byron Marshall returned from IR, and it was widely assumed that they would eventually part with one. However, choosing Bibbs certainly is strange.

Bibbs showed solid ability as a backup receiving back and really looked like he could be a quality part of the team. At the very least, he had outplayed Marshall and was playing ahead of Samaje Perine. So, why would the team part with him while keeping those two? I happen to be a fan of Perine, but I still wouldn’t have parted with Bibbs in this scenario. He has shown more than Marshall in their respective Redskins tenures, so this once again seems like inefficient roster management.
Meanwhile, the decision to waive Marcus Smith is a minor surprise, solely because the team doesn’t have a lot of depth at the rush linebacker position. Perhaps his release signals that Ryan Anderson is close to returning to the field. Or, perhaps the former first-rounder, Smith, just didn’t show much in his limited time with the team. Either way, he won’t be missed much.
Now, the players that the Redskins have added may all serve a purpose. Notably, Andrew East is a fine add as a replacement long snapper. Sundberg has been a great long snapper for the ‘Skins for a long time, but if he isn’t healthy, stashing him for next season is a sensible move.
As for Matt Flanagan and Josh Holsey, they have both been with the Redskins organization since coming into the league. Flanagan signed as an undrafted free agent in 2018 while Holsey was a seventh-rounder in 2017. They will add depth to their respective positions, and Holsey will have a chance to battle for the slot corner job if he plays his cards right.
Flanagan is a fine addition as well, and he will be a third-string blocking TE. That said, I would have preferred to see the team add J.P. Holtz from the practice squad. Holtz was a solid fullback/tight end hybrid who blocked well in the preseason, and I think he has more receiving ability than Flanagan. But still, this is a backup tight end we’re talking about, so it’s not a huge deal.
These moves do serve a purpose, but parting with Bibbs makes little sense. He is still somewhat young and has proven to be a solid option with the team in recent weeks. Hopefully, they will realize their mistake and try to bring him back in the near future. He could catch on somewhere else if given the chance, so we’ll certainly keep an eye on whether or not any teams show interest in Bibbs.
