Redskins Halftime Takeaways: Lack of offense sinking team
The Washington Redskins offense can’t do anything, and they were shut out in the first half against the Giants.
It wasn’t expected that Mark Sanchez and the Redskins banged up offensive line would be able to play well. But even still, their performance against the Giants so far has been even worse than expected. They’re down 34-0.
In the first half against the Giants, the Redskins couldn’t move the ball at all. They have just 51 yards. Adrian Peterson had a nice run at one point. Aside from that, the team showed virtually nothing. Jamison Crowder had some bad drops. The offensive line struggled to open up any sort of space with two converted tackles starting at guard. And, of course, there’s Sanchez.
Sanchez didn’t look good in the first half. There is some sympathy to be had for him, as he has barely been with the team, but even still, he was awful. On his own one-yard line, Sanchez tried to throw a pass and it got tipped at the line of scrimmage. It was picked by Curtis Riley and returned for a pick.

Later, Sanchez would toss another pick that would lead to a Giants score. He threw the ball well behind his intended receiver before it got nabbed by Alec Ogletree.
Those throws demonstrated everything that was wrong with Sanchez. He just doesn’t have great arm strength, has poor accuracy, can’t get the ball into tight windows, and he struggles to properly read the field. He is going to continue to have issues for the rest of the season, especially against tougher defenses in the coming weeks. That is just the reality of the situation for the ‘Skins.
To make matters worse on offense, Jordan Reed limped off with an apparent foot or ankle injury early on. He was listed as questionable to return, but things don’t look good for the injury-prone tight end.
On the defensive side of the ball, the team had some life early. They did well to pressure Eli Manning at times, but their issues with tackling persisted for yet another week. They had trouble containing Saquon Barkley — he had a massive 78-yard TD run — and allowed Corey Coleman, yes, Corey Coleman, to make a big play against them. They have to better. There’s no two ways about it.
The Redskins are going to keep struggling with penalties and ineffectiveness on third down. They won’t be able to pass the ball with any sort of consistency. Unless something changes drastically at halftime, the Redskins will continue to watch their season slip away from them.
