The Washington Redskins won’t have to face Odell Beckham Jr. on Sunday. That should give their defense a chance to step up in a critical contest.

Well, this one came out of nowhere.

According to the New York Giants official injury report, Odell Beckham Jr. has been dealing with a quad injury in practice this week. Everyone expected that this was just a minor issue. Instead, the team has ruled him out ahead of Sunday’s contest against the Redskins. That will give Washington a much better shot on the defensive side of the ball to contain the Giants.

With Beckham out, the major offensive weapon for the team to focus on will be Saquon Barkley. The ‘Skins did well to limit Barkley when the teams met early in the season, but the defense has been playing with much less discipline as of late. For that reason, it’s hard to trust them, especially if touches are funneled to Barkley. That said, if they regain their early-season magic and slow down Barkley, the Redskins will have a chance to hold the Giants offense in check for most of the day.

In terms of pass-catching weapons, Sterling Shepard becomes the No. 1 receiver with Beckham out. He will likely draw the coverage of Josh Norman, and it will be interesting to see who wins that matchup. If Norman does emerge victorious there, then Evan Engram will be the only other target for Eli Manning to consistently look towards.

Basically, with Beckham out, the Redskins now only have to worry about three offensive weapons instead of four. And given that Beckham may be the best and most explosive of the bunch, they have to be happy about avoiding seeing him in action — especially since he logged 136 receiving yards in the last meeting between the two teams.
