Earlier this year, the Redskins believed they had solved their quarterback needs for the next several years, but it looks as if it is still a need.

Are you an optimistic person?  Do you believe in keeping a positive attitude at all times or at least most of the time?  Being a Redskins fan has been very trying over the last month and it has tested the patience of everyone in 2018.  One month ago, at 6-3, the team had a comfortable lead in the NFC East and the optimism flowed.  Fast forward to the present.  The Redskins are spiraling downward and the optimism has disappeared into an ocean of despair and depression.

The primary reason for the recent losses obviously centers on losing quarterback Alex Smith for the season after he suffered a broken fibula and tibia on November 18 against the Houston Texans.  Colt McCoy suffered a broken fibula as well last Monday night against the Eagles.  It’s enough to test the most positive of fans amongst us, but the team could be facing a dilemma that no one could imagine just a few weeks ago – what the Redskins will do about their quarterback situation this off-season.

Sources suggest that Smith’s injury is very serious as there are complications due to an infection.  Burgundy Blog first put the news on Twitter Wednesday evening and national sports media widely reported on it by mid-day Thursday.

If this information is confirmed, then it is time to take the logical steps of finding a potential starter at the position, preferably a young prospect that could start much sooner and not later.  Colt McCoy likely returns as he is under contract in 2019 and having that veteran presence can bridge any gap to the future.

Let’s assume the worst and accept the reality that Alex Smith’s career potentially ended on November 18.  The next step is to finish the season with the current roster and continue to make a push for the playoffs.

We must also realize that making the post-season is something of a longshot, so let’s say the season ends on December 30.  The very next day should formally begin the process of extracting the next franchise quarterback from the long list of prospects.  Let’s take some brief looks at the quarterbacks that could be wearing a Redskins uniform next year.
