Redskins quarterback Alex Smith suffering from complications after surgery
By Ian Cummings
Redskins quarterback Alex Smith had successful surgery on his broken leg. But in the aftermath, however, more problems have arisen.
It was known that, the moment Washington Redskins quarterback Alex Smith suffered his leg injury against the Houston Texans, at the hands of J.J. Watt, that the injury was severe. The degree of the severity, however, was not known until Smith underwent testing, and it was revealed that he’d suffered a compound fracture, breaking both his fibula and tibia.
Surgery was performed on Smith’s injury immediately, and initial reports stated that the surgery had been successful. However, complications have arisen from the surgery; complications that could further cloud Smith’s return time table.
According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, Smith is dealing with an infection that is related to the surgery. Specific details are not yet available, but it’s clear that the matter is serious.
The Redskins also released a statement on their quarterback, seen below.
The implications of Smith’s injury, from a contract standpoint, pale in comparison to the impact it might have on Smith himself. Per Eric Bickel of The Sports Junkies, Smith has had multiple surgeries, in fact, to combat the infection, and Bickel asserts that ‘the chances of Smith playing again are in real jeopardy’.
It’s a crushing blow for Smith, who came to Washington in the offseason of 2018 to prove himself to the world. He came to a place where he was genuinely wanted, and although his style of play was unorthodox, that style led to wins, something that the Redskins fan base hasn’t been accustomed to seeing over the years. Smith was endeared to the fan base as a leader, a winner, and a good man.
To say he is undeserving of the complications that have arisen is a vast understatement.
But injuries do not stop in the name of morality, or mercy. Devastating injuries can happen to anyone, at any moment, and Smith’s is another painful example of such. For now, the quarterback is stuck in a battle. A different kind of battle. It takes place off the field, but much, much more is at stake.
He has a city behind him. He has a city to come back to. With any luck, he will.
