Redskins vs. Eagles: 5 keys to victory on Monday night

No. 5 – Redskins’ offensive line must handle talented Eagles’ pass rush
This one is going to be huge. The Eagles’ defensive line is arguably the best in the league, and they are deep at the position as well. Being able to constantly apply pressure was one of the reasons the Eagles won the Super Bowl last year, even after Carson Wentz went down. Routinely getting pressure can cover up a lot of deficiencies of the defensive side of the ball.
While Brandon Graham and Chris Long are two players who must be accounted for, Fletcher Cox is the one who can single-handedly wreck a game. He is a three-time All-Pro already, and if he gets going, the Redskins won’t. With the injuries on the line, it is imperative that Chase Roullier step up and handle the interior rush that Cox is going to bring.
Because the Eagles’ front four is so good at generating pressure, they do not have to blitz as some teams do, so they can drop more guys in coverage. One way to handle an excellent pass rush is with quick passes and screen passes. Getting the ball out quickly can negate the impact of the pass rush.
This is one area where Chris Thompson’s return can help. He is outstanding in pass protection and helping pick up the blitz, and he can also provide a spark in the screen game. If the Redskins can minimize the impact the Eagles’ pass rush has on the game and McCoy can go through his progressions, they will be in excellent position to steal one on the road.
