The Redskins lost Alex Smith for the season due to a broken leg. Now, it seems that Colt McCoy was lost for the same reason.

Colt McCoy was supposed to have his chance. After a long wait, he was going to return to the spotlight as a starting QB in the NFL. Alex Smith had gone down with an unfortunate, brutal-looking injury, and McCoy took over as the starter. And it was his chance to prove himself.

Instead, McCoy now has met the same fate as Smith.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport (via ESPN’s Lisa Salters), McCoy suffered a broken fibula against the Eagles. McCoy came up limping early in the game and after the Redskins offense left the field, he tried to work through the injury. He couldn’t, and X-rays revealed that he had in fact broken his fibula. And now, McCoy will be out for the rest of the season.

With McCoy out, Mark Sanchez is now in at quarterback for the Redskins. He was just signed by the team a couple of weeks ago after the Smith injury. While Sanchez has some familiarity with the Redskins coaching staff, rolling with him as the starter is a massive risk, but it’s one that they have to take. They simply don’t have anyone else at the position.

The ‘Skins will certainly sign another QB at some point in the near future. They worked out a group of guys after the Smith injury, so don’t be surprised to see one of them join the team as the backup. None are too inspiring at this point, but they just need somebody who can play the position.

McCoy’s injury is a crushing blow to the Redskins. Sanchez is such a wild card and he’s playing behind a banged-up offensive line with a mediocre receiving corps. It’s going to be a tough task for the Redskins to win any games with this situation on offense, but we’ll see if they can pull off an unlikely comeback story.

But either way, you have to feel for McCoy. He waited a long time for his opportunity, and now he won’t get a chance to take advantage of it. Get well soon, Colt. We’re rooting for you.
