Report: Redskins were only team to put in waiver claim for Reuben Foster
The Washington Redskins made a controversial move by claiming Reuben Foster on waivers. Apparently, they were the only team to do so.
When the San Francisco 49ers waived Reuben Foster, it was expected that nobody would touch him. Coming off the second domestic violence accusation of his young career, Foster was waived after repeatedly causing trouble for the 49ers. And the latest accusations confirmed that he hadn’t learned from his past mistakes, so nobody would give the embattled player another chance.
Or so people thought.
Instead, the Redskins surprised many by taking a chance on Foster. Yes, the team did have a need for a three-down linebacker, so in terms of roster fit, that makes sense. But again, Foster was accused of domestic violence for a second time. The fact that he would essentially get a third chance is mind-boggling, and it just proves NFL personnel value talent more than they value character. And that is a problem.
Of course, that may just be true of the Redskins front office in this specific case. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the ‘Skins were actually the only team to put in a claim for Foster.
In other words, 31 teams across the NFL weren’t willing to take on Foster’s baggage. The Redskins were the one that was.
At the end of the day, this move doesn’t have an impact on the rest of the Redskins season. It seems unlikely that Foster will play this year after being placed on the Commissioner’s exempt list. But, what this move does show is the true colors of the organization.
While Doug Williams and the team made it abundantly clear that “nothing was promised” to Foster, the fact of the matter is that it is still a very bad look for the team. And in fact, it could turn into an embarrassment — if it isn’t already.
The Redskins were willing to claim a man who was arrested for domestic violence just days ago. They were the only squad willing to do it.
That’s the reality of the situation. Let that sink in.
