After a crushing defeat on Sunday and on a day when the Redskins lost their starting quarterback for the season, there are reasons to be optimistic and thankful.

As Thanksgiving 2018 arrives, the Washington Redskins face a challenging division game with a roster that looks more like a MASH recovery room. The number of injuries is staggering and the team was dealt a huge blow last Sunday when quarterback Alex Smith was lost for the season.  However, there is no reason to toss in the towel on the 2018 season and fans should look at five reasons to be thankful during this week as we celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday in America. Not only thankful, but optimistic.

A Capable Backup Quarterback

Head coaches know the value of a backup quarterback and how it can impact the season, according to Barry Svrluga in the Washington Post this week. Having a capable backup can save a season or make it a bit better with some much needed momentum.

Colt McCoy will now be the Redskins starter and his leadership and experience is needed in the remaining games of 2018.  His success, or lack thereof, will dictate if the Redskins will make the playoffs, win the NFC East, or finish with a disappointing record. However, McCoy has had positive results during his tenure as a reserve for the Redskins. Yes, we are thankful to have a talented leader as the backup, and now the starter, for the Redskins.

A Winning Record

Let’s head back to August for a moment. Many fans, pundits, and media gurus had the Redskins finishing no better than third place in the NFC East. Yours truly had the Redskins finishing no better than 6-10. I’m very glad to be wrong. It’s obvious that all of these predictions were incorrect. The burgundy and gold lead the division, and the chances of winning the NFC East crown are good. Yes, we are thankful to have a winning record, but the next step is very possible.

Chasing a Division Title

Let’s be honest here. A loss to the Cowboys could hurt the Redskins chances of winning the NFC East, but having a solid conference record means they are still in the hunt. A victory on Turkey Day puts the Redskins firmly in command of the division. It’s that simple. Fan forum bgobsession.com suggested on social media that this game is the most important contest of Jay Gruden’s career.  Yes, we are thankful that the Redskins are playing for a division title this late in the season.

Players Who Value Hard Work

Call it the “Alabama Effect”. Several players have talked about what it takes to be a winner this season.  Jonathan Allen has talked about it. The same for Daron PayneAdrian Peterson values hard work and credits his workout routines for being successful. Players like D.J Swearinger and Tress Way practice each day with a determined enthusiasm and their intensity on the football field is unmatched. Yes, we are thankful for leaders on offense and defense who set the example of hard work for the entire team to see.
