The Washington Redskins are no longer in sole possession of first place in the NFC East. They lost to the Dallas Cowboys by a final score of 31-20.

Disappointing. That’s the best way to describe this effort from the Redskins. They just didn’t show up in the second half. They trailed by a field goal at halftime, but following the intermission, things got out of control.

The reason for this is simple. The defense collapsed. Both Quinton Dunbar and Fabian Moreau slipped in coverage on Amari Cooper, and he was able to long two longer TDs against the defense. The coverage busts were explainable, but they really took the energy out of the team.

One other missing piece for the Redskins defense? They couldn’t convert any turnovers. They had at least one turnover in every other game this season, but they couldn’t do anything against the Cowboys. They got pressure and four sacks, but that was just in the first half. After the intermission, they struggled to make splash plays. And that’s why the Cowboys were able to convert consistently on the offensive side of the ball.

For the Redskins, Colt McCoy was a part of the problem on the offensive side of the ball. McCoy simply tried to take too many chances. As a result, McCoy threw three interceptions. The ball came out of his hand wobbly too frequently, and that caused him to be inaccurate. McCoy will absolutely have to improve moving forward and avoid mistakes.

This game was also demonstrative of why the team will miss Alex Smith. Smith didn’t turn the ball over, and that set up the defense for success. McCoy’s mistakes put the defense in bad positions. And that will continue to happen if he can’t improve.

On the bright side for the offense, Jordan Reed and Vernon Davis emerged as a legitimate two tight end set for the ‘Skins. They both played well and McCoy seemed to have a strong rapport with the duo. Moving forward, they will continue to be involved in the team’s offense.

This game wasn’t pretty for the Redskins. It exposed their flaws. They’ll need to improve moving forward on defense and McCoy has to play better. Oh, Adrian Peterson showing up would also be nice, but it seems that he may be wearing down as the season goes along.
