Redskins QB Alex Smith breaks leg, will miss remainder of 2018 season
Alex Smith’s season is over after a gruesome hit sustained in the second half versus the Texans.
During the third quarter of the Washington Redskins Week 11 matchup against the Houston Texans, Redskins quarterback Alex Smith took a shot from Texans star J.J. Watt and needed to be carted off the field. Smith, 34, was looking to bring the Redskins to their seventh win of the season.
Colt McCoy would enter the game in place of the injured Smith, and would throw for 54 yards and a score in a game that went right down to the wire. It was reported that Smith was taken right to the X-ray room after his injury, and was quickly loaded into an ambulance and taken to the hospital.
Later on, it was revealed that Smith had suffered a broken tibia and fibula, a very serious injury that would require immediate surgery. Early reports were not promising, and Adam Schefter confirmed the unfortunate news after the conclusion of the game.
As evidenced above, Smith’s season is over. Smith had over 2,000 yards, 10 touchdowns, and five interceptions, two of which were thrown in today’s game.
From this point on, Colt McCoy will assume the starting role for Gruden’s Redskins, and the team will surely be holding workouts for available free agent passers in the coming days. They face the Cowboys on Thanksgiving day, and will need another quarterback on the sideline.
The Redskins still sit atop the NFC East standings after their loss to Houston, and they will look to extend their lead Thursday with a win over Dallas, who topped the Falcons Sunday to improve to 5-5. The Redskins’ defense, and the success of Adrian Peterson, will become increasingly important to this team down the stretch in the wake of Smith’s injury. Suddenly, this season got a whole lot more interesting.
