The Alex Smith injury has left the Washington Redskins very thin at the quarterback position. Here’s a look at some of the top available options that the team could sign to serve as a backup.

The Redskins season isn’t over. That’s an important thing to remember. That said, the Alex Smith injury was a crushing blow to a team that was already struggling on offense. While Smith wasn’t having a great season, the veteran starter had been mostly solid and mistake-free during the team’s campaign. Now, he will miss the rest of the season after suffering a brutal leg injury that left his tibia and fibula broken.

In Smith’s stead, Colt McCoy will step into the starting lineup. McCoy is a more than capable backup, and he will have a chance to lead the team to victories. He has a skill set that should allow him to largely replicate what Smith has been able to do, so that’s a positive.

That said, the Redskins now have no depth at quarterback. Literally, they have only McCoy. They waived Kevin Hogan after the preseason, and the Broncos scooped him up. And on their practice squad, they don’t have anyone. They need to find some depth to stash behind McCoy just in case their current starter gets hurt.

There aren’t a lot of inspiring options at the QB position. At this point, they’re likely going to have to settle on an over-the-hill veteran or an up-and-coming young player that could potentially progress while on the roster. With that said, here’s a look at the best potential options that could be the new backup for the team.
