The Washington Redskins made a few roster moves on Tuesday that were somewhat surprising. They waived Joshua Holsey and released Mack Brown from the practice squad.

We’re at the point in the season where contending teams are really starting to figure out who the contributors are on their roster. The Redskins appear to be at this point now. They are making roster moves every week to improve the overall configuration of their 53-man squad, and they have had a few surprises from those moves.

On Tuesday, the team made a couple of roster moves that were somewhat surprising. First, opted to waive Joshua Holsey right when it seemed that the corner was ready to return to action. Holsey hadn’t played all season, but it was still an opportune time for them to give him a chance to prove himself by working as a depth player.

Apparently, the trio of Greg Stroman, Danny Johnson, and Adonis Alexander has shown well enough to warrant waiving Holsey. Stroman did have one of his best games of the season against the Bucs last week, but still, bringing in Holsey to compete as a depth player wouldn’t have been a bad move. Perhaps the team just didn’t want to have seven corners on the roster, but still, considering the praise Holsey got in the preseason, this is somewhat of a surprise.

Elsewhere, the ‘Skins made a couple of notable moves on the practice squad. They signed Casey Dunn to the unit and terminated fan-favorite Mack Brown’s contract.

The signing of Dunn makes a lot of sense. Dunn had been on the active roster until the team suffered a plethora of offensive line injuries. The team must have deemed him not ready for action, as the center was waived by the squad. That said, he is still a solid technician and has upside if he can pack on some weight. Keeping him in the fold is a good move for the future for sure.

As for the release of Brown, this is the third time the Redskins have parted ways with him. The other times he was waived, ‘Skins fans were upset with the team for letting him go. However, at this point, it looks like Brown’s potential to be an effective rotational back is pretty much over. He couldn’t beat out Kapri Bibbs or Samaje Perine for a roster spot, and with Byron Marshall‘s return likely to happen soon, they just had no need for a fifth RB — even on the practice squad. Brown will enter the free agent pool again, and it will be interesting to see if any NFL team considers adding him to their practice squad.

At the end of the day, these moves were mostly back-end roster deals. The most surprising move of the bunch was cutting Holsey, but that speaks volumes about the potential of the young corners on the roster. The Redskins will be fine after these moves, and it will be interesting to see how they elect to fill the vacant spot on the roster.
