The Washington Redskins now have extra depth in their secondary. They activated Joshua Holsey from the reserve/NFI list on Monday to provide additional depth at corner.

Over the course of the offseason, Joshua Holsey was the subject of some buzz for Redskins fans. He reportedly had shown well during his rookie season and was lauded for his intelligence. He saw minimal action in 12 games last year, but with the departure of both Bashaud Breeland and Kendall Fuller, there was an opening for a top backup job with the Redskins. And many thought that Holsey would compete for it.

Going into the preseason, some thought that Holsey would challenge for the nickel role. Or win the job as the primary backup on the roster. However, a freak accident occurred when Holsey dropped a table on his foot. That caused him to be placed on the Reserve/NFI list and not much was heard about him after that.

Until now, that is. According to NFL insider Adam Caplan, Holsey was activated by the team on Monday afternoon. He takes the spot of offensive tackle Geron Christian, who was placed on season-ending IR after suffering a torn MCL against the Bucs in Week 10.

Getting Holsey back now is good news for the Redskins. Quinton Dunbar has missed a handful of games recently dealing with a nerve issue affecting his shin/leg. Holsey’s return will give the team some veteran depth, and they won’t have to rely on rookies Greg Stroman and Danny Johnson quite as much as they have been in recent weeks.

It’s unclear exactly how game-ready Holsey might be, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him play sparingly in Week 11. Stroman had one of his best games of the season last week anyway, so easing Holsey back in may be the right move. That said, adding a smart player who has been described as a coach on the field during his collegiate career can’t hurt the team, and at the least, it will add depth to the secondary.

It will be interesting to see if Holsey can live up to the preseason hype and carve out a role in the Redskins secondary. Of course, it will be equally interesting to see if he’s even active this week. He’s a player to monitor in the lead-up to Week 11 for sure.
