The Washington Redskins are hurting on the offensive line. One of their divisional rivals just released a player that could help provide depth to the team, Patrick Omameh.

The Redskins have struggled to stay healthy on the offensive line in each of the past couple of seasons. In Week 10, the Redskins are already certain to be without three starters on the unit as Trent Williams is out for the game while Shawn Lauvao and Brandon Scherff are out for the season. In addition to this, right tackle Morgan Moses is banged up, so the team may be without as many as four starters this week.

To the team’s credit, they did add some solid depth in free agency in the form of veteran options. Jonathan Cooper, Luke Bowanko, and Austin Howard were all added to provide depth and it seems that Cooper is going to start at left guard. In addition to this decision, Casey Dunn was waived from the active roster, so the undrafted center won’t get a chance to play.

Though these moves were fine ones that will help to address depth, the ‘Skins still need to look for depth across the league. After all, they’re still being forced to start Tony Bergstrom at right guard, and that’s less than ideal. Bringing in a player with more starter experience that can be plugged in if the line struggles would be a smart move. And one did just become available.

On Saturday, the New York Giants elected to cut Patrick Omameh just midway through his first season with the team. Omameh entered the year as the starting right guard for the team, but he didn’t perform up to expectations. He had signed a three-year, $15 million deal with the Giants in free agency, so seeing him cut was a surprise.

So far this season, Omameh has been an average player and has graded as the No. 61 guard overall according to Pro Football Focus. That may not make him sound like a promising option for the team, but it puts him roughly on par with Shawn Lauvao (PFF’s No. 59 guard). That’s not necessarily inspiring, but at this point in time, just adding someone that can provide decent depth and potentially start is a smart move.

It also helps that Omameh is a former Giant, and with one game remaining against that squad, it’s possible that he could help unveil some secrets that could help the ‘Skins in their future matchup. Of course, that may not actually be the case, but it certainly won’t hurt his cause in trying to land a new job.

Omameh may not be better than any player that the Redskins have already added, but if they’re discouraged by what they see from their line on Sunday, they could opt to try and shore up the position more and add Omameh to the fold. At the very least, he has starting experience and has started 51-of-60 games over his five-year career with four teams.

It’s unlikely that Omameh will be available long, as some team that needs offensive line help should look his way. The Redskins are one of the teams that could consider bringing him in and carrying 10 offensive linemen until they can figure out a quality rotation. It’s unclear whether or not they’ll actually have interest in him, but at the very least, they should try to meet with him.
