The Washington Redskins made a move today on the defensive side of the ball. They added defensive lineman Stacy McGee to the active roster and waived safety Kenny Ladler.

The Redskins roster has seen a lot of shuffling over the course of the past few days. After losing three offensive starters to season-ending injuries and adding three new offensive linemen to the roster, the team continued to make moves on Tuesday. This time, the moves came on the defensive side of the ball.

According to the team’s official Twitter, the Redskins elected to activate Stacy McGee from the PUP list. The defensive lineman had been on that list since hurting himself in the offseason, but was always expected to return at some point during the season. To make room for McGee, the team waived safety Kenny Ladler.

The move to activate McGee will add some depth to what is one of the strongest position groups on the team’s roster. Save for last week’s game against the Falcons, the defensive line has mostly performed at a high level. That said, adding McGee could help them add another rotational player to the mix.

McGee’s best skill is his run stuffing ability, and he will slot in as a natural rotational piece at the position. He will probably play mostly on early downs and will help to clog lanes along with Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen. He’s not going to take a starting job away from any of the three, but he may sub in regardless and play early in some games.

Getting McGee back is fine news for the ‘Skins, as it adds some needed depth to the trenches. That said, it remains to be seen which defensive lineman they may leave inactive on game day or whether they’ll make the decision to have six men active at the position. That’s definitely something to watch ahead of Week 10.

The corresponding move to cutting McGee was to part ways with safety Kenny Ladler. At this point, that makes sense for the squad. Ladler was a good special teams presence, but the team already had enough talent on that unit.

In all likelihood, Washington was either going to cut Ladler or potentially Jehu Chesson, but it made more sense to cut Ladler due to positional need. With four guys ahead of him at the position in wake of the Ha Ha Clinton-Dix trade, the Redskins simply didn’t need Ladler anymore. Perhaps he could be stashed on the practice squad. It certainly wouldn’t be a surprise to see him back with the team at some point this season.

Overall, this move is mostly just a depth move. The ‘Skins are just swapping a D-lineman for a safety. Both could have roles on the roster, but McGee’s is clearer right now, so it makes sense as to why the team would activate him at this point in the season.
