No. 3 – Alex Smith needs to be more consistent

We’ve said the same thing for a few weeks now; Alex Smith can’t keep playing the way he is. With a strong running game and and an aggressive, blossoming defense, Washington can stay afloat with average quarterback play, but at some point, Smith will have to make a play. The nature of his position demands it. And so far, he hasn’t been able to elevate his unit.

Let’s not act like Week 7 was Smith’s worst performance to date; it wasn’t. The veteran showed a bit more poise in the pocket, and a bit more zip on his throws. But still, he was out of sync, out of rhythm with his receivers, missing several open men downfield.

The good news? The issues that plague Smith appear to be redeemable, and it’s not as if he’s playing bad football. The concerns stem from an inevitability that Smith will have to do more in certain situations. Because of how the Redskins have played so far, Smith hasn’t had to take on much pressure, individually. But when he does, there are concerns as to whether he’ll be up for it.

Whatever the case, Smith should strive for consistency in the coming weeks. As a veteran with plenty of solid football under his belt, he’s earned our trust for the time being.
