No. 2 – Redskins defense needs to limit big plays by opponents

This wasn’t an insurmountable problem for the Redskins in Week 7, but it provided just enough of an inconvenience that it takes up a spot on our list.

The Redskins defense has performed at a borderline elite level this season, notching top five and top ten marks in most statistical categories. On Sunday, their strong season continued, albeit with a few asterisks.

In the first half, Greg Stroman let by a long touchdown to Michael Gallup (he played well for most of the game, but had this one blemish). Later on, a missed tackle by Josh Norman led to a 33-yard gain. These kinds of plays were few and far between for the Redskins, but they helped the Cowboys maintain slivers of momentum, with which they managed to stay in the game until the final whistle.

In the future, more capable offenses will take advantage of big plays, much like the New Orleans Saints did against the Redskins on Monday Night Football a couple weeks ago. This is an outlet Washington can’t afford to leave open, and it’s something the defense needs to polish in practice, moving forward.
