Has first place ever felt this bad in the history of football? Can the Redskins recover from the Blowout on Bourbon Street in time to avoid the season spiraling out of control?

At the quarter-pole of the NFL season, we usually know a little bit about who’s good, who’s bad, who’s underachieving, who’s overachieving, etc. But in the NFC East in 2018, I think we almost know less than we did before the season began.

I think we can confidently say that Graham Gano effectively ended the Giants’ season on Sunday. But after watching Dallas’ defense beat up on Deshaun Watson, while their offense looked inept, and after watching Carson Wentz and the vaunted Eagles’ defense looked pedestrian against a Vikings team that had been bad up to that point in the season, most Redskins fans were starting to feel optimistic about this season.

And then Monday Night happened. The Monday Night Massacre, Part II. The Saints made jambalaya out of the Redskins in every possible way, and now, any clarity we thought we were starting to develop about the NFC East this year is gone.  Add in the Eagles’ dominant win over the Giants on Thursday Night Football, and any optimism Redskins fans had last week seems pretty unfounded, now.

So what is the reality? What do we know and what can we expect moving forward out of this Redskins team this year?  What are realistic expectations for a home game, against a good opponent, on a short week, after that disaster in New Orleans?  Here are your Redskins Reality Checks for Week 6 vs. the Carolina Panthers.
