The Washington Redskins lost in embarrassing fashion to the New Orleans Saints. They have to figure out where to go next.

Some thought that the Redskins would have a chance against the Saints. That didn’t turn out to be the case. The Redskins played very poorly and ended up getting trounced by a final score of 43-19. It was truly a disappointment in a game that they should have at least been competitive in.

Nothing went right for the Redskins. Their offense looked decent early, but the wheels fell off for Alex Smith late in the game. He couldn’t complete a pass in the red zone in the second half and looked as pedestrian as they come. His receivers didn’t help the cause, and Jordan Reed didn’t have a target until the team was already down 27 and well into the third quarter. That’s not a recipe for success.

On defense, things were even worse. The secondary was shredded throughout the game. Drew Brees tore them apart easily and consistently got the ball to Tre’Quan Smith of all players to score at will. They committed terrible penalties on third downs — Montae Nicholson’s was particularly bad and led to this game somewhat spiraling out of control — and they really didn’t have any discipline in this contest.

This game also reflected poorly on Jay Gruden and the coaching staff. It would be one thing to come into the game with energy and effort and still lose. But once again, they put up a dud in a big game that could have afforded them an opportunity to build on a lead in the NFC East. But instead, they played horribly all-around. And some of that has to fall on the coaching staff — especially the blown coverages on defense.

The players deserve some of the blame as well. They had nothing, gave nothing, and seemingly gave up after halftime. That’s just inexcusable. They need to get their heads in the game for Week 6, or they may suffer a similar fate against the Panthers.

There really aren’t many positives to take out of this performance. It’s something that we’ve seen a lot from the Redskins in the past five years, but this team was supposed to be different. They were supposed to show up when needed and at least fight hard. And this loss demonstrates that this team is still far from what fans were hoping for when the season started.

Moving forward, the ‘Skins have to dust themselves off and move on. This can be a cautionary tale for the team, but if they put up another performance like this, it will become abundantly clear that they’ll have no chance to make the postseason.
