Running back Chris Thompson and the Redskins return to the ‘Big Easy’ tonight, looking to avenge their biggest loss from last year.

I hate to give Washington Redskins fans a reminder of what happened last time they played against the Saints, but I’ll make it as short as possible.

Washington squandered a 15-point lead with three minutes left in regulation. The game went to overtime and the Saints won the game 34-31. That, in essence, symbolized how the 2017 season was. Not only did Washington suffer one of the more demoralizing losses in franchise history, but they lost Chris Thompson for the season with a fractured fibula.

On Monday night, the Redskins have the opportunity to steal a big win on the road against a quality opponent. The Saints feature possibly the most high-powered offense in all of football. One way to slow down an offense is to supplant the defense with a ball control type of offense. The performances of running backs Adrian Peterson and Chris Thompson can go a long way toward producing a Redskins win.

Both players have a unique history with the Saints. Peterson was traded by New Orleans to Arizona last season because of the emergence of Alvin Kamara and Mark Ingram. Thompson was having a career season until it was derailed by injury vs. the Saints.

Thompson was slowed down by the Packers two weeks ago. Green Bay clearly game-planned for Thompson, as his production was limited. Against New Orleans, the Redskins could plan to attack their linebackers in coverage with the aforementioned Thompson. Thompson is a matchup nightmare for Saints linebackers A.J. Klein, Demario Davis and Manti Te’o.

Mark Ingram and Alvin Kamara are recognized as the best running back duo in the league. However, the Redskins boast their own unique dynamic duo at running back in Adrian Peterson and Chris Thompson. Peterson rose to the occasion in week one in the first installment of ‘Put up your Dukes’. Now it’s time for Chris Thompson to do the same.
