Redskins fans, rejoice! Mack Brown has made his triumphant return to the Washington Redskins.

The 2016 preseason finale was one of the most exciting moments of Mack Brown‘s career. The former undrafted free agent looked superb for the Washington Redskins and was able to total 149 yards and a touchdown against the Buccaneers. Sure, he was going against depth players, but many Redskins fans hoped that he would make the active roster. He did not.

For the next season and a half, the Mack Brown fan club would consistently call on the ‘Skins to elevate him from the practice squad and give him playing time. Eventually, he did land on the active roster in 2016, and he broke a 62-yard TD against the Bears. In 2017, many were clamoring for a larger role for Brown, but he mostly functioned as a depth player. And then, he was waived after appearing in three regular season games.

After being placed on waivers, the Minnesota Vikings claimed him and kept him on the active roster as third-stringer. He never got a chance to carry the ball, but once again, he impressed in the 2018 preseason and many assumed he could be a third-stringer again. However, he was waived with an injury designation before the start of the season and remained on the open market after that.

That is until today. The Redskins have officially brought Brown back to their team to provide organizational depth at the running back position. Brown agreed to sign to the practice squad and will effectively be the No. 5 back for the Redskins.

This is a solid move by the team for a number of reasons. First of all, Brown is familiar with the offensive system and knows Jay Gruden. That will allow him to re-integrate himself into the offense easily and he can be relied upon if necessary.

Second, there’s no risk in bringing him in as a practice squad player. At the very least, he provides solid, veteran depth. At the worst, if things don’t work out, he can be released back into the free agent pool. But now, the ‘Skins have some solid injury protection in the event that any of their top four backs go down.

Brown may not make it back to the active roster. He would need to beat out Samaje Perine and Kapri Bibbs to do that. But the fact is that he’s back in Washington and at some point, he may have a chance to suit up for the Redskins again.
