4. Samaje Perine leads the Redskins in yards per carry

Sunday is likely going to be the first time that Samaje Perine is active this season. And in this contest, he will certainly have a chance to prove himself when he gets a few carries.

While Adrian Peterson will still handle a brunt of the carries against the Packers, Perine should be given a chance to see about five himself to help keep Peterson fresh. And on those carries, Perine will have a chance to make some plays and prove that he deserves a bigger role.

I’ve been an unabashed supporter of Perine for most of the offseason, and recently spoke of how he will now have a chance to step up in the wake of Rob Kelley’s injury.

More from Riggo's Rag

"So far in 2018, Peterson hasn’t been anything special as a starter. He’s averaged just 3.1 yards per carry so far, and while he has dealt with poor blocking, he still hasn’t been very good. Perine should have a chance to be better than or equal to Peterson, so getting him a few carries against the Packers should be a goal for the coaching staff. For Perine, this is a big chance to step up. The Redskins running back situation is still in flux, and the second-year player has a chance to emerge as the starter as the year goes on. If he can do that, he’ll be given a chance to serve as the primary backup to Guice next season. He really is battling for a future with the team, so he must make the most of his opportunities."

I’m still not sure the volume is going to be there yet for Perine, but if he can lead the team in yards per carry, that may earn him a bigger workload moving forward. I do think that the backfield will eventually trend towards a split in carries between Peterson and Perine, and this might be the week that it starts.
