Chris Thompson: Start

Thompson has been Washington’s entire offense through the first two weeks. That won’t change this week. Smith has targeted Thompson a team-high 21 times. Leading the team in targets, receptions (19), and receiving yards (155), Thompson will be looked at again this week to carry the load of the Redskins offense.

Green Bay’s defense has allowed 12 receptions and 99 yards to opposing backs through the first two games against offenses that don’t look to target their backs all that often. The Packers have also allowed 100 yards per game on the ground to a tune of 4.6 yards per carry.

As the teams most explosive weapon, Chris Thompson should see his regular 10-13 touches and add to his 7.3 yards per carry average. Thompson should have a field day against the Packers defense and could sniff the end zone for the second time this season. If you have him, start him.

More from Commanders News

Adrian Peterson: Sit

Peterson had a rough day at the office against Indy in Week 2, managing 20 yards on 11 carries. The future Hall of Famer will look to bounce back against the Packers mediocre rush defense.

Washington already has some injury concerns along their offensive line, losing starting LG Shawn Lauvao this week and having a banged up Brandon Scherff could spell trouble for the Redskins ground game. Starting center Chase Roullier will slide into the left guard spot and back up center Tony Bergstrom will start in the middle of the line in Sunday’s game.

Peterson isn’t primarily a pass catcher and should the ground game struggle this week, Peterson could have a hard time getting any extra looks in passing situations. Until we can get a better feel for what the Redskins ground game will be long-term, Peterson is a matchup-based start.

Jamaal Williams: Sit

The Packers starting running back has not been able to get going so far this season managing only 106 yards on 31  carries. He comes in facing a top-10 Redskins defense against the rush that is allowing 86 yards per game on the ground. They held David Johnson to 37 yards in Week 1 and allowed only 104 yards between four separate rushers in Week 2.

Washington’s new front, with Daron Payne and the healthy duo of Jon Allen and Matt Ioannidis, has limited opponents to 4.0 yards per carry. The Packers should struggle on the ground early and often on Sunday, which will limit Williams’ impact for Green Bay. Barring a huge receiving day, Williams will be a non-factor and should remain buried on the bench for Week 3.
