No. 1 – Alex Smith is worth every penny

Alex Smith’s Stat Line: 21/30, 255 yards, 2 TDs

In addition to the stats above, Smith finished with a QBR of 80.1, a quarterback rating of 118.1, and a completion percentage of 70 percent. This is exactly what we anticipated from Alex Smith. We expected pinpoint accuracy and limited mistakes.

I know Smith’s game isn’t exciting to watch sometimes, but he’s exactly what teams need in the NFL. These short, safe, passes are what keeps the chains moving and made the Redskins successful in week 1.

There are limited risky plays in the arsenal for Smith, but that’s something to look forward to. It allows the team to be at ease and not worrisome for turnovers. We can finally trust our quarterback to make the right decision. Smith showed that even if it’s not the popular decision, he’s not going to make the best decision for the team, which is exactly what the Redskins have been searching for in a leader.

Smith’s performance also indicated that most defenses will have trouble controlling his play. Smith was extremely quick and decisive and got the ball out before rushers could get to him. It’s hard for defenses to get into position and defend when plays are happening that quickly. As a defensive coordinator, it’s difficult to call blitz packages when Smith is delivering precise throws in seconds.

Smith does need to get the football down the field more, which will drive me into my next point, but the bottom line is that Smith is going to be able to take the Redskins to the next level and compete very closely for the NFC East division title.
