No. 3 – LB Zach Vigil

The case of Zach Vigil is a curious one. He came onto the team as an unheralded player last offseason, unlikely to stick around for the regular season. The team cut him, surprising no one, and he took up residence on the Buffalo Bills’ practice squad, from which he would ultimately be released in October, just a month after joining.

For two weeks, Vigil was a free agent. But on November 14, he was signed back by the Redskins, who had lost half of their linebacker core to injury since starting the season. Vigil was thrust into heavy action, and he performed surprisingly well. For as little preparation as he had for the situation, he played well in run defense, and showed an ability to cover as well. He wasn’t perfect, but he showed impressive potential as a primary backup.

Heading into the offseason of 2018, it seemed as if Vigil had secured himself some assurance, as far as his roster spot was concerned. But now, after training camp and three weeks of preseason, his fortunes have shifted.

The Redskins do not appear willing to let go of Josh Harvey-Clemons and his immense upside, and sixth-round rookie Shaun Dion Hamilton has impressed, flying around the field in limited action. Martrell Spaight has also shown more than Vigil up to this point; his coverage has been suspect as always, but he’s a force in run defense and on special teams. That versatility will bode well for him.

At most, the Redskins will likely keep five inside linebackers, so Vigil needs to come ready to play on Thursday. Once deemed a near-roster lock, his future with the team is now in question.
