The Redskins don’t necessarily need to bring back Junior Galette. But adding him could provide the team with a quality playmaker at a low price.

Junior Galette has been trying to land a job since his deal with the Redskins expired. While many Redskins fans were hoping that Galette would return, Galette didn’t like what the Redskins were offering and ended up looking elsewhere. With just a couple of weeks left before the start of the season, he remains unsigned but has recently taken visits with the Seahawks and Rams.

However, those visits have gone nowhere and Galette voiced his frustration over this. And on Twitter, he spoke of his desire to return to the NFL in a since-deleted tweet that stated he would play for the veteran minimum. This tweet, from 247Sports’s Allan Bell, provides the link to Galette’s deleted tweet.

One can only assume that his agent instructed him to take it down, as knowing a player would play for the veteran minimum could impair Galette in negotiations.

It is worth noting that Galette did express the potential desire to return to Washington in that message. While it’s unclear whether or not the organization would have an interest in Galette, they should at least consider bringing him back to compete for a roster spot.

The Redskins don’t have a lot of depth at the rush linebacker position. Ryan Kerrigan and Preston Smith are both very good starters, but behind them, the depth is middling. Pernell McPhee is a solid rotational pass rusher who excels at setting the edge in run defense. Meanwhile, Ryan Anderson is a former second-round pick who hasn’t shown much ability at the NFL level. He could develop into a solid backup or a high-motor starter like Trent Murphy, but he may not be ready to step into a top backup role yet.

By adding Galette, the Redskins would add a true speed-based pass rusher to the defense to play in rotation with the strength-based McPhee. Anderson could then serve mostly as a special teams player as he looks to continue his development. If Galette truly is willing to play for the veteran minimum, there would be no risk for the Redskins in making this kind of deal, as it would add depth to one of the thinnest spots on their roster.

Of course, adding Galette would likely push another player off the 53-man roster when cut day comes. That could be enough to deter the Redskins from making a deal depending on what they think of their depth at other positions across the team.

Still, there are far more pros to bringing in Galette than there are cons. Worst case scenario, he doesn’t pan out and the team cuts him. Best case, he turns into the excellent rotational player he was last season. At the very least, the Skins should keep talks open with Galette in case they suffer an injury at the position, as he would be the man to sign in the event that one of their top four guys missed time.
