What a week.

If I told you, 365 days ago, that in a year, Alex Smith would be the Washington Redskins starting quarterback, and Adrian Peterson would be the Redskins starting running back, you’d probably scoff. Maybe let out a muffled laugh. I probably would, too.

But here we are.

The calamity surrounding the Redskins running back room will attract the most attention, and rightfully so. The position has taken such a downturn over such a short period of time. After last year, it was clear that the Redskins needed an improved running game. They were bound to have that with Derrius Guice. They pulled off a truly masterful move to bring him in. But now that lost promise is overshadowed by the signing of a former MVP.

The Redskins’ philosophy is clear in this move, and perfectly understandable. The show must go on. The running back situation has grabbed all the headlines as of late, but aside from the running back stable, the team, which appears to be well-built, has undergone little change this offseason. The team is still solid. And the team has a game this week.

In that game, updates to the running back situation will be acquired, but so too will updates to multiple position battles across the board. Additionally, the starting units will look to impress in their dress rehearsal for the regular season. Which five players deserve the most attention in the coming battle with the Denver Broncos?
