Redskins hosting Jamaal Charles as part of RB workouts
The Redskins are working out a group of running backs on Sunday afternoon. Jamaal Charles is one of the guys they’re looking at.
In the wake of three more injuries to the Washington running back corps including ankle injuries to Samaje Perine and Byron Marshall, and a leg injury for Martez Carter, the Redskins are looking to add another player to their backfield. On Sunday, they are working out several RBs to see if any of them are worth signing. Yesterday, it was reported that Orleans Darkwa would be among the candidates in attendance. Jamaal Charles added his name to that list today.
According to ESPN’s Josina Anderson, Charles is going to be among the backs working out at the Redskins facility. While Charles’ name and familiarity with Alex Smith may excite some, the fact is that the would merely be a rotational option if he is the player the Redskins end up choosing.
Charles is a 10-year NFL veteran who is well past his prime. He hasn’t put up a high-quality season since 2014, and the Chiefs elected to part ways with him ahead of the ’17 campaign. Charles spent that year with the Broncos, but by the end of the year he was barely involved in the offense and was a healthy scratch when Denver faced Washington in Week 16.

Since his deal in Denver expired, Charles has remained on the free agent market with little interest being shown. And that is sensible given the fact that he has only played in 22-of-48 games in the past three seasons and hasn’t put up more than 541 scrimmage yards in any of those campaigns.
Bringing in Charles for a workout isn’t a bad move for the Skins. At this point, seeing which veteran backs are available and which ones have something left in the tank is a fine move. That said, expecting Charles to be anything more than a rotational player would be foolish, so they have to know going in that his best role will be as a depth player if they elect to sign him.
At age 31, Charles wouldn’t provide much upside to the team. He’s a veteran back who has familiarity with Smith, but that will only get him so far. Redskins fans should hope that another back shows more than Charles, as he really wouldn’t be much of a difference maker as part of the team’s offense.
