The shuffling of the Redskins roster continues as the team added undrafted free agent wide receiver Allenzae Staggers to their roster.

In the wake of releasing Orlando Scandrick prior to their second preseason game, the Redskins had an open spot on their 90-man roster. The team didn’t elect to add a player prior to their Thursday night game against the Jets, which was sensible as the player wouldn’t have been likely to play anyway, but they did make a move on Saturday afternoon to add depth to their roster.

While some may have been expecting, or hoping, that the team added a running back to their roster in the wake of injuries to Derrius Guice, Byron Marshall, and Samaje Perine, the team elected to add a player at another position. According to NBC Sports Washington’s Rich Tandler, the Redskins signed Allenzae Staggers to their roster to provide more depth at receiver as a camp body.

Staggers played his college ball at Southern Miss, and he did have over 1,100 yards and seven touchdowns during his junior season. However, as a senior, Staggers regressed and couldn’t reach 500 yards. He still put up five touchdowns, but he didn’t really do a lot to show that he was any more than a potential camp body.

At this point in the offseason, the Redskins are just adding Staggers to provide depth to their roster at receiver. They have a lot of quality candidates at the position, but they could stand to give some of the veterans/potential roster locks some extra time off to ensure that they don’t get hurt. That will give Staggers a chance to prove that he’s worthy of latching onto a practice squad spot somewhere.

Still, it is highly unlikely that Staggers will do much with the Redskins, and he faces extremely long odds of making the practice squad. He’s firmly behind at least eight receivers on the team’s depth chart, and as many as three of those guys are candidates to qualify for the practice squad in Trey Quinn, Cam Sims, and Simmie Cobbs, provided that they don’t make the active roster.

At this point, Staggers has some upside, so adding him is a fine move. Still, it’s a bit strange that the team didn’t add a camp body at running back, as they only have three or four healthy players there ahead of their third preseason game. We’ll see if the team makes another roster move before they take on the Broncos on Friday evening.
