At times, it wasn’t pretty. And at other times, it was very pretty. Amidst ups and downs, the Redskins managed to get the job done against the Jets, winning 15-13.

The No. 1 goal in preseason in never to win, but it doesn’t hurt to do that, and usually, when you win, you’re doing a lot of things right. The Washington Redskins, or at least two-thirds of the Redskins, played with polish on Thursday night.

Washington’s starters looked spry on both sides of the ball. Alex Smith was efficient on one drive, going 4 for 6 for 48 yards and leading the Redskins to the goal line. The first-team defensive line was borderline dominant, with Daron Payne and Jonathan Allen combining as a formidable duo on the interior. And Dustin Hopkins was sharp, hitting all five of his field goal attempts.

That said, as the team’s backups entered the game, the Redskins lost some of the spunk that helped them take a nine-point lead. There were flashes all across the board, and the Redskins managed to eek out a closely-contested win, but while the starters played a complete, consistent game, there’s reason to believe that things can improve, from a depth standpoint.

We’re a little tired in this podcast, as it was recorded close to midnight, but we still managed to piece together some thoughts on Washington’s nail-biting win against the New York Jets. How did Alex Smith look in his Redskins debut? Who made a case to make the roster? Which positions looked best? What were some areas for concern?
