Byron Marshall seemed to be gaining momentum as a potential addition to the Redskins roster. Now, it appears that he will miss 2-to-4 weeks after suffering an ankle injury.

There are some players that just always seem to get hurt at the worst possible times. Byron Marshall is one of those guys. After appearing to be a contender to make the Redskins roster as a backup to Chris Thompson, Marshall suffered an injury in the team’s second preseason game against the Jets. He left the game and wouldn’t return.

According to NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero, Marshall is now set to miss a couple of weeks to a month with an ankle injury. This is a major blow to Marshall’s chance to make the roster, and it also hurts the already fragile depth at the running back position for the Redskins.

Derrius Guice, presumed to be the starter by many, suffered a torn ACL in the first preseason game and will miss the season. Samaje Perine, who had a 30-yard burst on his lone carry of the second contest, suffered an ankle sprain and the extent of his injury is unknown. And now, Marshall is out for an extended period of time. That’s three backs on the shelf of the Redskins top-four guys.

With Marshall out, there will be more opportunities for Kapri Bibbs and Martez Carter to prove themselves. Bibbs shined as a receiver against the Jets, grabbing a 29-yard pass and leading the team in overall receptions. He looks like he could be a quality backup to Thompson and though he didn’t do well between the tackles, he still was better than Marshall was at the task.

As for Carter, he flashed quickness and speed on a couple of runs that he bounced to the outside late in the game. Of course, the diminutive back was playing against the Jets third stringers, but he still flashed enough to be given more opportunities. After all, he was known as “Mr. Excitement” in college and I did compare him to Tarik Cohen at one point. So, there’s a chance that he could become a dynamic weapon or at the very least, be a productive member of the practice squad.

No matter how you spin this, Marshall’s injury is going to significantly hurt his chances of making the final roster. He was already engaged in a tight battle, so getting hurt, struggling between the tackles, and almost fumbling won’t help him out. Marshall may get a chance later in the season, but for now, this injury could push him to the wrong side of the roster bubble.
