No. 5 – Running Back

Battle: Samaje Perine vs. Rob Kelley vs. Byron Marshall vs. Kapri Bibbs

The injury to Redskins’ second-round running back Derrius Guice makes way for an extra back to be kept on the final roster, but it also sends the pecking order spiraling into chaos.

It’s anyone’s guess who the Redskins’ lead back will be, or if anyone will be able to separate from the pack in the next three weeks. As it stands, Samaje Perine, Chris Thompson, and Rob Kelley are the top three backs, leaving one spot for either Byron Marshall or Kapri Bibbs.

That said, Jay Gruden has mentioned that the team could keep five running backs and go with a full-blown committee in September. That seems to be an unlikely conclusion to the team’s running back battle, however. More likely is the trade of either Samaje Perine or Rob Kelley, if one or the other proves to be the better option in the Redskins’ upcoming preseason games.

The performance of this group will decide how the Redskins decide to move forward during final cuts. Thompson is a lock, but anything else goes. Could Kelley and Perine both make the team? Yes. Could Bibbs and Marshall both make the team? Yes. Might the Redskins delve into the free agent market? That, too, is a possibility. It’s all contingent on how this group performs in preseason. They’ll have their next chance to shine tomorrow evening.
