Re-examining the Redskins CB battle after Orlando Scandrick’s release
Danny Johnson
This is another one of the guys who did a lot to make Scandrick expendable. Johnson, an undrafted free agent out of Southern, has been very good for the Redskins to start the offseason, and he flashed during the first preseason game as well. The move to cut Scandrick has many believing that Johnson will make the final roster, and that certainly is a possibility.
Johnson was an FCS All-American in college and put up solid numbers in his final season. He had three picks and 55 tackles despite being undersized (5-foot-9, 181). He had a decent offseason showing, and some expected him to be a late-round pick. Johnson ended up falling to the ranks of the undrafted and the Redskins quickly scooped him up, and our own Ian Cummings ranked him as the Redskins best UDFA for the season.
During training camp and the preseason, Johnson was all over the field and made a lot of nice pass breakups. In the first game, he saw a lot of action across from Stroman, and he held his own. Because Johnson is on the smaller side, he probably will be limited to a role as a slot corner at the NFL level. But still, he has shown good enough instincts to earn a role there.
It’s also worth noting that like Stroman, Johnson has been working as a return man at times. He doesn’t appear to be high on the depth chart at that position but again, the versatility will be a big factor when trying to pare down the final available spots on the roster.
Johnson might have the inside track to the No. 6 corner spot right now, but he has to continue to play well. Otherwise, he might get some competition from other players further down the roster, or it might prompt the team to put him on the practice squad especially if Holsey can get healthy. Still, Johnson has proven to be a solid player so far and should continue to have a chance to prove himself.
