Re-examining the Redskins CB battle after Orlando Scandrick’s release
Ranthony Texada
In the past couple of days, Texada has started to emerge as a potential candidate for the roster. The undrafted free agent out of TCU has done well in practice sessions drawing some praise from the media in attendance. He was promoted to the second team for Tuesday’s practice after a strong Monday showing, per Redskins.com’s Greg Cohen, so that is a positive development for the TCU product.
That said, Texada still has to prove himself on the field this week. In the first preseason game, he didn’t have much of an opportunity to do anything, so he wasn’t able to keep pace in the race with Johnson and Stroman. Thursday is going to be his big chance to prove himself, so he’ll need to step up.
For what it’s worth, Texada had a very good career at TCU, but he was considered undersized (5-foot-9, 170 pounds) coming into the NFL. A late-season, bowl game struggle against Stanford in which he was “exposed” per WalterFootball.com’s Charlie Campbell really hurt his draft stock and explains why he wasn’t invited to the scouting combine. Still, Texada had some solid college tape, and he has demonstrated upside in recent days. That’s what led the Redskins to target him as an UDFA.
Right now, I would say that Texada is the seventh cornerback fighting for the sixth spot with Johnson and possibly Alexander. If Texada doesn’t make the team, he will be a shoo-in for a practice squad spot unless another cornerback-needy team snaps him up. But again, his chances of pushing Johnson for that sixth spot will hinge on his performance in Thursday’s game against the Jets.
