Maurice Harris

At this point, it seems highly likely that Harris is going to make the Redskins final roster. Harris has enjoyed a terrific camp to date, making spectacular catches in almost every session and proving to be a solid, consistent weapon. Add in his versatility and he seems to be favored as the team’s No. 4 receiver for the moment.

On the field in preseason Week 1, it was clear that Harris was Colt McCoy‘s top target, and two passes in the early-going went out to him. On those players, Harris was able to gain separation thanks to his sharp route running technique, and at one point, he beat the Patriots No. 1 corner Stephon Gilmore and was able to get very close to a first down.

Later in the game, Harris made a pretty catch in the end zone, that saw him have the presence of mind to drag his toe near the corner of the end zone while he secured the ball. Harris just has the makings of a smart backup who could fill in for a starter in a pinch.

With Ryan Grant now on the Indianapolis Colts, it seems that Harris is the favorite to take on his role as the super-sub who can serve as a spot starter. Of course, it would help for Harris to continue to impress, make catches, and play consistently. It’s easy to overreact to camp and one training camp performance. But if he can put up big numbers against the Jets, there’s a chance that he will be able to completely lock down a roster spot after preseason Week 2.

Harris wasn’t impacted all that much by the Davis injury. He was already trending towards the inside of the roster bubble before Davis got hurt. With one less man to fight off, Harris is poised to make the 53-man roster prior to Week 1 for the first time in his three-year Redskins career.
