The Redskins lost their first preseason game, but did they win the night?

At one point in their preseason debut, the Washington Redskins had a 17-0 lead over Bill Belichick’s New England Patriots. This came at a time when the Redskins were resting most of their starters, while Belichick still had many of his first-teamers in the game.

That success wouldn’t last, as the Patriots’ depth players would rally back and score 26 unanswered points. But in the first true football game of the year, the Redskins showed plenty of promise, both on the team and the individual level. Rookies shined and veterans dominated, and for a long time, the Redskins had all of the momentum, snuffing the Patriots out of the game.

For all of the promise displayed, however, there were some unfortunate developments in the Redskins first preseason game. Derrius Guice and Matt Ioannidis both went down with knee injuries, and Trey Quinn left the game early after getting hit hard in the rib area. The initial diagnosis on Guice’s injury asserts that he suffered an MCL sprain (per Ian Rapoport), although we are still waiting for MRI confirmation. No more information has been given on Ioannidis or Quinn. We will be on top of it when it comes to light. If the MCL sprain diagnosis stands for Guice, he should be expected to sit out the rest of preseason, with his Week 1 status in question.

In the meantime, want to hear who shined in Washington’s preseason debut? Did Washington find clarity at positions of conflict, and did bubble players step up when they needed to? You can find all that information, and more, by clicking the “play” button below!

The Redskins play the New York Jets next week, with similar goals in mind. Separation is still yet to be made at wide receiver, tough decisions are pending on the defensive side of the ball, Alex Smith has yet to play with pads on. Look for all of these issues to go through some form of development in the coming weeks.

Above all, however, the Redskins need to stay healthy. The team is deeper than it was last year, but early injuries don’t help anyone. As long as Jay Gruden keeps his stars healthy, they can make some noise in the regular season.
