Redskins Training Camp Day 9: Depth at WR, CB making impact
Washington Redskins training camp has been mostly positive for the team, and the optimism continued on Sunday afternoon.
The Redskins have seen a lot of their playmakers and contributors shine during training camp this year. This has led to a sense of optimism from the team and their fans, but there is still a lot to be decided. On Sunday, we got more of a glimpse at the receiver and cornerback battles, so here’s the big news and rumors coming out of Redskins camp today.
Perhaps the biggest news was that backup receiver Maurice Harris continued to impress. Harris, who for many was a roster afterthought given the additions that Washington has made this offseason, has shined in training camp and a very solid skill set, and that was on display again Sunday.
ESPN’s John Keim noted that Harris was once again a standout for the Redskins, and noted a particular highlight from Sunday’s session.

"The Redskins will have interesting decisions at receiver. But one who has consistently stood out among the backups is Maurice Harris. He did it again when the Redskin ran some two-on-two drills vs. the corners. He was able to get a clean release vs. corner Greg Stroman at the line and headed down the right side. Stroman played fairly tight, though lost sight of the ball as he turned back to the quarterback. But Harris reached high and caught the ball and never brought it down, thereby preventing Stroman from stripping it."
Harris seems to have an edge as he looks to make the final roster. His strong hands and good route running skills could make him an ideal replacement for Ryan Grant, so it’s quite possible that Harris could win the No. 4 receiving job instead of Trey Quinn, as many Redskins fans have hoped.
It’s also worth noting that quite a few Redskins missed practice due to various injuries and ailments. Matthew Paras of The Washington Times kept a list of the main names who missed the session, and here’s why they were all out.
Jamison Crowder and D.J. Swearinger missing time was obviously planned as the team looks to keep their veterans fresh. Meanwhile, Tyler Catalina and Kyle Kalis were both taken off the field with the heat concerns on a humid, 90-plus degree day in Richmond. They should be fine with rest and hydration.
The biggest concern on this list is Shawn Lauvao, who has had injury concerns during his Redskins tenure. The projected starting left guard is nursing another leg injury, and if he can’t get healthy, the Skins don’t have a ton of depth on the line to fill in for him. Hopefully, his ankle is okay and this was more of a maintenance day to ensure the malady didn’t worsen.
One final note, the Redskins appear to have found an undrafted gem in Danny Johnson. The rookie from Southern has impressed during camp, and he made more plays on Sunday afternoon and received praise from the coaches. If the Skins didn’t have a lot of young depth at corner, Johnson would probably have a great chance of making the roster. Right now, that’s more of a coin-flip, and he will likely have to beat out Adonis Alexander and Greg Stroman for a spot. That could be doable, but we’ll know more about that once the preseason starts.
