Redskins Training Camp Day 7: WRs continue to impress
The Washington Redskins continued training camp on Thursday before a day off Friday. Here’s how the session went.
One week from tonight, the Redskins are going to be playing in their first preseason game against the New England Patriots. It’s hard to believe that preseason football is that close. In the meantime, the Redskins have been continuing to impress at training camp, and there is certainly a growing sense of optimism surrounding the team.
Every day, the Redskins receiving corps becomes a bigger and bigger story. The team has done well to add a lot of talent to the unit, and it appears that they are going to have a very good unit there this season. However, who they’ll keep is pretty much an unknown at the moment, as many have stated.
Today, the two most consistent players, per ESPN’s John Keim, were Brian Quick and Maurice Harris. Here’s what Keim said of their respective performances.
"Two receivers who are having strong camps: Maurice Harris and Brian Quick. Jay Gruden praised Harris’ route-running and hands; a big separator for him in the past has been not being able to provide much help on special teams. But Harris’ hands remain strong. Quick, too, has been consistent. If the Redskins only keep six wideouts, it’ll be interesting to see who makes the cut. Along with Harris and Quick, Trey Quinn and Robert Davis are among those competing for the final three spots."

Ian Cummings and I discuss this exact position battle in an upcoming podcast, and it really is hard to pick three of those four guys to make the final roster. The Redskins really can’t go wrong at receiver, but they will certainly have to make a tough cut. As time goes along and preseason games are played, it will become clearer who the top dogs at the position are.
Elsewhere on offense, it seems that both Rob Kelley and Samaje Perine are going to see some action at the fullback position. Or, at least Jay Gruden is considering it, per Matthew Paras of The Washington Times. This would be a smart move, as the Redskins aren’t likely to carry a traditional fullback on the roster this season. That said, it seems likely that either Rob Kelley or Samaje Perine will make the 53-man squad, so they can take over that role from the departed Niles Paul.
Either one of them manning the duties will be better than having Ryan Anderson at the position, as he needs to focus on becoming a bigger playmaker on the edge.
Now, for the defensive side of the ball. The defense had a solid day with players such as Zach Brown, Josh Norman, and Fabian Moreau standing out. The Redskins would absolutely like to see their playmakers continue making an impact, and it appears that this defense still has very high upside moving forward. If Greg Manusky can get them motivated, they could find a lot of success.
One note on an important roster battle, the aforementioned Paras is reporting that Martrell Spaight has been working as a third-team linebacker for the Redskins and that the team has Josh Harvey-Clemson, Shaun Dion Hamilton, and Zach Vigil ahead of him. That’s not a good sign for Spaight’s roster chances, and given that he was already on the roster bubble, he will need to step up if he has a chance to make the final roster.
The Redskins have a day off tomorrow but will be back in action on Saturday. We’ll keep you updated with all the latest rumors as camp rolls along!
