Washington Redskins training camp was cut short on Sunday. They got in the morning practice, but the afternoon walkthrough was canceled.

After dodging bad weather for the first few days of training camp, the Redskins finally saw some of their practice time get canceled. The afternoon walkthrough was wiped out due to rain, so most of the news coming out of Skins camp is done for the day. Here’s a roundup of what happened and what to keep an eye on.

One of the major storylines was the continued improvement of the Redskins receiving corps. Per 106.7 The Fan’s Rick Snyder, Paul Richardson is looking like a red zone threat and had some nice catches in the end zone. This may surprise some, but it’s important to note that Richardson has excellent body control and solid hands, so it’s not a major surprise that he is succeeding.

The Redskins Twitter showcased one of Richardson’s best plays, and needless to say, it should provide the team’s fans with some excitement about the new signee’s ability.

Alex Smith reportedly had another nice day at practice and is looking like a very solid option at the quarterback position. Smith showcased mobility, ball placement, and arm talent and that should certainly be a good sign for the Redskins team. It’s looking more and more probable that he will be an upgrade over Kirk Cousins.

Sticking at quarterback, the Kevin Hogan hype train also appears to be rapidly losing speed. After Colt McCoy got a one-year contract extension early in training camp, Hogan hasn’t looked good as a passer, as noted by NBC Sports Washington’s Rich Tandler, who highlighted some of Hogan’s shortcomings from Sunday.

"Doubts about Kevin Hogan continue to grow. He’s had problems hitting receivers downfield. Today, he tried to execute a pitch to the left with no defenders. He threw it too far behind Derrius Guice and the back couldn’t handle it. Just my guess but the pressure may be getting to him."

Hogan was always a project passer, but his mobility and ability to run outside plays like pitches, options, and more was supposed to give him a chance to make the roster. Right now, he appears to be on the outside looking in, and he could continue to move down the bubble as time goes on.

Tandler also noted in that same piece that the Redskins saw their first scuffle of training camp. It was between two of the team’s best players… tight end Matt Flanagan and linebacker Vontae Diggs. The two roster longshots just shoved each other a few times after the play was over. Nothing big to read into there. They’re just trying to show toughness and competitive spirit.

Of course, there were some injuries at camp to keep an eye on. Brian Quick suffered a thigh contusion and is day-to-day. Mason Foster got nicked up as well and left the field. The extent of his injury is unknown at the moment, but there are just the typical injuries that take place on every team at the beginning of training camp. Hopefully, these issues blow over in a couple of days.
