Redskins Injuries: Daron Payne set to miss 2-3 weeks after injuring ankle
The Redskins have already suffered some injuries in training camp. Daron Payne is set to miss a few weeks after hurting his ankle on Friday.
This isn’t something that Redskins fans wanted to hear about early in training camp. After an injury-ravaged 2017 campaign, the last thing that people wanted to see was the Redskins first-round pick getting hurt early in training camp. But, that’s exactly what happened.
Daron Payne had his left ankle stepped on in practice on Friday, and that injury is going to sideline him for a little bit. The good news is that the timeline is only for two to three weeks. So, Payne will have plenty of time to get healthy before the start of the season and should still log some action during the preseason as well.
ESPN’s John Keim provided the update regarding Payne’s health and reported the following of the injury. Here’s what Keim said along with a quote from Jay Gruden.

"Defensive tackle Daron Payne will miss two to three weeks after injuring his ankle during practice Friday. He’ll be in a boot for the next week. Payne will start at nose tackle. Coach Jay Gruden said the absence won’t hurt Payne much. “He’s in great shape so it’s not a big deal,” Gruden said. “He’s already very smart and knows the defense. He’s in good shape.”"
It seems that this injury isn’t too serious. But still, there is concern that Payne was hurt so early on in training camp. He will be back before the start of the season, but if this becomes a lingering issue, it could have a negative effect on the rest of the Alabama product’s rookie season.
Redskins fans will also remember that last year’s Alabama rookie, Jonathan Allen, was only able to play in five games last season after suffering a foot injury of his own. That may make this feel like a little bit of deja vu, but the fact is that Payne’s injury is happening with more than enough time to heal before the start of the season should make it a non-issue to start the season. Thus, it seems less serious than Allen’s Lisfranc injury from last year.
It’s always concerning when a top draft pick goes down. Payne’s absence might hurt his development a small amount, but he will be healthy far before the start of the season. For that reason, the Redskins are smart to hold out Payne and ensure that he will be fully healthy to start the season.
Hopefully, Payne recovers quickly. The Redskins will need the young nose tackle to play an important role on the squad.
