In the wake of Joshua Holsey’s injury, the Washington Redskins have added more depth to their cornerback group. That would be Prince Charles Iworah.

The unfortunate injury to Joshua Holsey certainly has this year’s Redskins training camp off to an uneasy start. Holsey just got unlucky and suffered a foot injury after a glass table fell on his foot. With him out indefinitely, and possibly set to miss some time during the season, the Redskins opted to add some depth at the corner position, just to ensure they have enough bodies there during camp.

The man the team added was Prince Charles Iworah. The regal name may give some fans hope that he could challenge for a roster spot, but in reality, Iworah will probably be a camp body at the most.

Iworah was a seventh-round pick by the 49ers in the 2016 NFL Draft. He stayed in San Francisco for two seasons and was active for one game. In his first year, he was on the practice squad save for a meaningless game late in the year. The second season, he landed on IR and was released by the team just prior to the end of the 2017 season.

Iworah signed a reserve/future contract with the Chiefs shortly after 2018 began, but he was waived by the team shortly after the NFL Draft. Since that time, he had been available on the free agent market.

The move to add Iworah isn’t a bad one by the Redskins. He did have four picks during his final year of college, and the team needed some extra depth at that position, as they would have had just eight players there for camp in the wake of Hosley’s injury. So, that made this a smart move from a depth standpoint. But again, don’t expect too much out of Iworah. He was considered a fast but raw player coming into the league, and he has done little so far to change that perception.

The corresponding move that the Redskins made to get Iworah is one that Redskins fans may feel differently about. Keith Marshall, another seventh-round pick from the 2016 NFL Draft, was waived with an injury settlement to open up a spot. Marshall, a very fast running back, had been with the Redskins for two seasons.

However, he landed on Injured Reserve in both of those campaigns after suffering an elbow injury and tearing his ACL. Given the depth they already had at running back, Marshall was simply a roster long-shot, so the Redskins elected to give him a chance to find work elsewhere. It’s possible that Marshall could be a rotational back if healthy, but he didn’t factor into the long-term plan in Washington. So, parting with him was sensible.

On paper, the Skins probably got a player downgrade in this move. But, it doesn’t matter. Both Marshall and Iworah are unlikely to make the final roster and probably aren’t the top practice squad candidates either. The Redskins just needed some extra depth at corner, and they had more than enough players at running back. At the end of the day, this is not a big deal and probably won’t have any impact on the Redskins final roster.
