Bashaud Breeland originally signed with the Carolina Panthers in free agency, but his deal was voided. Now, the former Redskins corner is visiting with a couple of AFC West squads.

Bashaud Breeland was one of the many Redskins players who defected in free agency during the 2018 offseason. Shortly into free agency, Breeland inked a three-year, $24 million deal with the Carolina Panthers. He was expected to serve as the team’s No. 2 corner, but the Redskins weren’t too worried about losing him. They elected to keep Quinton Dunbar instead and left the battle for the No. 2 corner spot wide open.

However, Breeland’s deal with the Panthers ended up being voided after he failed a physical with them. Since that time, Breeland has been sitting on the free agent market and hadn’t seen much interest.

That is soon to change. According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, Breeland is taking visits with a couple of teams from the AFC West in the coming days. Here’s what Demovsky said on Twitter.

Both of these scenarios seem like ideal fits for Breeland, but one is definitely more intriguing. And that would be the Oakland Raiders.

Jon Gruden is the new head coach of the Oakland Raiders and the team could use some depth at cornerback. Rashaan Melvin and Gareon Conley figure to be the starters, but the team doesn’t have a lot of quality depth behind them. Breeland could serve as a top backup for the squad, and it would also stand to reason that the elder Gruden has the inside scoop on what Breeland is capable of from his brother, Jay.

Breeland would probably come on a one-year contract, and he would have at least a chance to compete for a starting role. Melvin probably would have a leg up on him, but since he too is on just a one-year deal, nothing is guaranteed.

With the Chiefs, Breeland would have a much better chance to start. In fact, he could end up being their No. 1 cornerback. Save for Kendall Fuller, last year’s top slot corner who landed with the Chiefs via the Alex Smith trade, Kansas City doesn’t have a lot of talent at the position. David Amerson, a former Redskin, and Raider, is a streaky player who might be better served as a backup. And after him, the team only has nickel back Steven Nelson to play a role.

If Breeland signed in Kansas City, he and Fuller would likely be the starters with Nelson and Amerson rotating in depending on the package. That could work well for Bob Sutton’s defense, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Breeland land there.

It still appears that the Redskins are perfectly fine letting Breeland walk. They already have too many solid players at cornerback, and many of them are young. So, bringing back Breeland would make little sense, as they have at least a comparable starter in Dunbar and a lot more upside on the bench. Breeland is almost certainly going to sign elsewhere barring a change of heart in the Redskins organization — or a slew of injuries.
