Draft season came again yesterday. And the Redskins capitalized on the opportunity to add a familiar face.

In the days leading up to the 2018 NFL Supplemental Draft, connections from the Washington Redskins to former Virginia Tech cornerback Adonis Alexander were drawn rather naturally. Alexander’s bed season at Virginia Tech came under the oversight of current Redskins defensive backs coach Torrian Gray, and two of his former team mates, Greg Stroman and Tim Settle, resided on the roster.

Despite these connections, there was some uncertainty surrounding the Redskins intentions in the supplemental draft. The last prospect selected in the Supplemental Draft by the Redskins was Jeremy Jarmon, a Kentucky defensive end taken in Round 3 of the 2009 Supplemental Draft. Jarmon would only last two years with the Redskins before being traded to the Broncos, where he was promptly released.

The Jarmon incident only highlighted the inherent uncertainty of the NFL Supplemental Draft, and that recent sting would have made it understandable for the Redskins to skip the 2018 Supplemental Draft entirely. Several players, such as Sam Beal and Adonis Alexander, were suspected to be coveted as early as Round 3, a high price for such an insecure asset.

Nevertheless, the Redskins got their guy, and at a much cheaper price than what was originally anticipated. No team put in a claim for Alexander in Round 4 or 5, and so the Redskins threw their hat into the Round 6 ring, and they came away with a player with potential, forfeiting a sixth-round pick in next year’s draft.

The upside with Alexander in Washington is intriguing. D.C. may have been the best destination for him. For a sixth-round pick, and a backup punter (whose name I unfortunately forgot in the podcast below), Alexander is a good get. Listen in as Nathan Britton, Jacob Camenker, and I discuss the acquisition.

The Alexander signing, if nothing else, is a no-risk move with the potential to bring the Redskins decent returns. His size and experience at multiple positions affords him versatility, but he’ll have to right the ship, in terms of character concerns, if he wants to stick around.
