Redskins: Riggo’s Rag Podcast – 2018 NFL Draft Backtrack
By Ian Cummings
It’s the thick of the offseason. Baseball has infested the television. There’s another kind of draft in a couple days. So let’s take a look back at the Redskins 2018 NFL Draft!
At the time of the NFL Draft, reactions were somewhat magnified. When the Redskins selected Daron Payne with the No. 13 overall pick, the fan base was split. Half of the fans were ecstatic, rejoicing at the newfound help on the defensive line. Others (including yours truly) were reeling. The Redskins passed on talented players such as Tremaine Edmunds and Derwin James to pick a relatively unproven player.
In the days following the Daron Payne pick, Washington alleviated any concerns about their draft that were cultivated on the first day. On Day 2, the Redskins managed to gain a third-round pick and first-round talent Derrius Guice, while also adding depth at tackle with Geron Christian.
On Day 3, the Redskins had their best showing yet. The Troy Apke pick in Round 4 was questionable, but from Round 5 on, Kyle Smith’s knowledge was clearly visible. The Redskins stole Tim Settle in Round 5, Shaun Dion Hamilton in Round 6, and Greg Stroman and Trey Quinn in Round 7. Those value picks could prove to be very effective in the future. There’s a good possibility that every Redskins draft pick could make the 53-man roster.
That kind of success is relevant. And now that the initial reactions from the 2018 NFL Draft have settled, let’s take a look back and appreciate what the Redskins managed to pull off that weekend.
