Jamarcus King had a solid two-year college career at South Carolina. He went undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft, but according to a report, he will join the Redskins prior to training camp.

The NFL offseason is never done. Though teams have filled out a majority of their 90-man rosters, there are always minor moves made during the summer months as teams look for more potential-packed players that are available.

One of those potential-packed guys is Jamarcus King. The former South Carolina Gamecock went undrafted in the 2018 NFL Draft, and has spent most of the offseason looking for work. It was a minor surprise, as the big, lanky player had a solid career at South Carolina, but the fact that he hasn’t latched onto a 90-man roster is the bigger surprise.

That said, it is rumored that King will have a deal in place in the near future. Per Kevin Boilard of 247 Sports, King is going to be signing a deal with the Washington Redskins in the near future.

This is certainly a solid move for the Redskins, given the potential that King possesses. Still, it is going to be difficult for King to make the squad.

On paper, King’s stats look very good. In two years at South Carolina, he logged 97 total tackles and five interceptions. He generally looked like a good starter and had the makings of a late Day 3 pick. King’s best skill set is his size, as he is 6-foot-2 and has a longer frame, so he has the size need to body up against most receivers in the NFL.

However, his speed is a bit of a concern. He only managed a 4.7 in the 40-yard dash, and that backs up what is seen on tape. King will have trouble dealing with fast receivers at the NFL level, so it’s questionable whether or not he will ever be able to develop into a starter. That said, he has strong instincts, good ball skills, and has the making of a solid special teams player at the least.

If the Redskins do indeed sign King, it would be a good investment. Right now, the Redskins have a lot of young, unproven talent at cornerback, but they have only eight players at the position on their roster. They could use some extra depth, just to ensure that they have a well-balanced roster.

King isn’t likely to compete for a spot on the roster. The young talent on the back end of the team’s roster, including Fabian Moreau, Greg Stroman, and Joshua Holsey, will likely complement the other veterans on the roster. King will have a chance to fight for a practice squad spot though, and he will get a shot to do that. Other undrafted corners Ranthony Texada and the talented Danny Johnson will be King’s main competition, but he could get a chance to make the 10-man practice squad.

King had good size and should at least be competitive when on the field in training camp. His speed may hold him back, but he’s still a solid player with upside. So, adding him at this point in the offseason makes a lot of sense.
