The Washington Redskins have clearly valued familiarity over outside talent on the interior offensive line this season. Their latest free agent signing reinforces that notion.

The Washington Redskins came into the offseason with a hole at left guard, one that had remained unfilled the previous offseason as well. They went through the entire free agency process without adding an interior lineman, and when the NFL Draft came, they again neglected to fill the open spot on the roster.

Now, the Washington Redskins are growing thinner at the position of offensive guard. Arie Kouandjio was recently confirmed as a total loss for the 2018 season. The remaining options consist of Shawn Lauvao, Tyler Catalina, Kyle Kalis, Tony Bergstrom, Cam Jefferson, and Casey Dunn. It makes sense that the Washington Redskins would be in the market for a new offensive guard. And earlier today, they added a familiar face to their ranks.

As explained in the tweet by NBC Sports’ J.P. Finlay above, Isaiah Williams, an undrafted free agent out of Akron, spent the entire 2016 on the Washington Redskins practice squad. He was given a chance to compete for a roster spot in the offseason of 2017, but he was unable to beat out the competition, and he was cut after preseason.

Not long after the Washington Redskins cut Williams, he was signed by the Kansas City Chiefs and placed on their practice squad. In mid-October, he was signed off of the Chiefs’ practice squad by the Indianapolis Colts. He would soon again be relegated to the practice squad, and on May 9, less than two weeks ago, he was officially released by the Colts.

Williams doesn’t have any starting experience; In fact, he didn’t dress for a single game last year. But at the very least, he provides depth and familiarity to the Washington Redskins’ offensive interior. This signing doesn’t mean that the Washington Redskins are done in that area. They have a whole offseason to weigh their options, and if they feel that they could use more, they could end up adding another player.
