After a foot injury nullified his lucrative deal with the Carolina Panthers, former Washington Redskins’ cornerback Bashaud Breeland appears to be close to finding a new home.

It’s been two months since Bashaud Breeland‘s whirlwind free agency period. The Washington Redskins allowed the 2014 fourth-round pick to test the market after the two sides failed to come to an agreement. On the market, he promptly received a contract offer from the Carolina Panthers worth $8 million a year.

Breeland accepted the offer, but soon, he would be cast out into the market again. He failed his physical with the Panthers due to a foot infection that stemmed from a non-football injury. He’s been recovering, and had just recently began taking visits, reportedly being hosted by the Colts and Cardinals. Now, after leaving Arizona without a deal, it appears he’s closing in on a decision.

Coincidentally, Indianapolis is the place that former Washington Redskins receiver Ryan Grant opted to go to after he too failed his physical after signing a free agency deal with the Ravens. Breeland will join a cornerback room in desperate need of help. Quincy Wilson, the team’s oft-injured second-round pick from last year, and Nate Hairston, a 2017 fifth-round pick, are the team’s best cornerbacks, so there is a decent chance that Breeland will exit camp as the No. 1 cornerback, if he ultimately signs with Frank Reich’s squad.

The Washington Redskins’ last opportunity to sign Breeland came on May 8. The team could have offered him a tender to keep him around, but they chose not to. It was clear from the start of free agency that Breeland and the Redskins were due to separate. Breeland wanted a chance to prove himself as the top dog, and now, it appears he’ll get that chance in the AFC South. The deal is not done yet, but his options are dwindling, and the two sides seem to be a match.

The Washington Redskins could have used Breeland’s tenacity for another year, especially on a cheap salary, but it was not needed. Quinton Dunbar played just as well as Breeland in relief last year, and he appears to have the inside track at the No. 2 cornerback position, opposite from Josh Norman. Fabian Moreau, last year’s third-round pick, should provide depth there as well, and the team is high on his abilities.

The Washington Redskins have already moved on, and Bashaud Breeland is close to doing the same. He missed out on a big pay day in free agency, but with a new chance on a Colts team that needs his talents, he could earn himself another one in 2019.
